US local journalism faces rising closures and engagement challenges

Local journalism in the United States is facing significant challenges, characterized by a rise in newspaper closures and ongoing efforts to modernize engagement strategies. In 2026, the rate of local newspaper closures has exceeded three per week, accelerating the creation of “news deserts” where communities lack independent coverage of municipal, police, and educational affairs.

To address shifting media landscapes, the Local NExT Lab—an initiative by Syracuse University supported by the W. K. Kellogg Foundation—has conducted experiments to improve audience relationships. Research involving organizations such as Mississippi Today, Gulf States Newsroom, Deep South Today, and Issue Media Group suggests that combining investigative reporting with community-focused news, social media presence, and video content can significantly enhance how audiences value local journalism.

Findings indicate that the perceived relevance of news depends not only on content but also on how it is presented and the identity of the journalists. These studies aim to provide editorial and distribution strategies to help newsrooms navigate the decline of traditional advertising models and the loss of institutional knowledge caused by frequent closures.
