US Marine arrested for suspected murder of woman in Okinawa

Japanese authorities have arrested 20-year-old US Marine Devin Jacob Ballard on suspicion of murdering 39-year-old Yagi Anna in Naha, Okinawa. The victim’s body was discovered in a hotel room on Saturday morning; police report she appears to have died from suffocation caused by pressure on her neck.

Security camera footage allegedly shows a person appearing to be a foreigner entering the hotel with the woman and later leaving with her belongings. Police suspect Ballard of killing the woman and stealing her wallet. Ballard, who is stationed at the US Marine Corps Air Station Futenma, was located in an entertainment district in Okinawa City and subsequently sent to prosecutors. He has denied the charges.

The incident has triggered significant diplomatic tension. Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi described the killing as a “heinous crime” and a “matter of profound regret,” noting that the government has lodged a strong protest with the United States. Officials have called on the US to “thoroughly enforce discipline” among its military personnel stationed in Japan, where approximately 54,000 US service members are currently based.
