US Marine Corps deploys F-35B squadron to Japan

The United States Marine Corps has deployed a new squadron of F-35B fifth-generation fighter jets to Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni in Japan. The VMFA-533 'Hawks' squadron arrived from Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort in South Carolina, replacing the VMFA-232 'Red Devils' as part of a long-standing rotational deployment program.

The F-35B is uniquely capable of short takeoff and vertical landing (STOVL), a feature that allows the aircraft to operate from smaller, less predictable locations. This capability is intended to increase aviation survivability in the Western Pacific by reducing reliance on large, fixed airbases that may be vulnerable to long-range missile strikes during a conflict.

While providing tactical flexibility, the deployment faces logistical challenges, as improvised operating locations require consistent supplies of fuel, munitions, and spare parts. Additionally, the F-35B variant possesses a shorter combat radius and carries less internal armament compared to the F-35A and F-35C models. The high cost of maintenance and procurement has also led to discussions regarding the aircraft's long-term sustainability for expeditionary advanced base operations.
