U.S. Marine Corps tests AH-1Z Viper precision strike capabilities

The U.S. Marine Corps successfully conducted a live-fire test of the Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System (APKWS) from an AH-1Z Viper attack helicopter. The exercise took place on May 12 at the Fort A. P. Hill training range in Virginia.

The test focused on the ability to execute precise strikes within highly constrained and limited firing areas. By integrating the APKWS onto the H-1 platform, the Marine Corps aims to bridge the tactical gap between standard guided missiles and larger precision-guided munitions, providing a scalable option with low collateral damage for time-critical targets in contested environments.

The event, coordinated by the Light/Attack Helicopter Program Office (PMA-276) and Air Test and Evaluation Squadron HX-21, verified critical weapons integration, range safety protocols, and ordnance handling procedures. This validation is intended to streamline future training and improve readiness for Marines operating from expeditionary sites.
