U.S. Marines deploy to Tierra del Fuego for cold-weather training
The Argentine Navy has confirmed the presence of U.S. Marine Corps personnel in Tierra del Fuego for specialized training. The deployment, described as an “exchange of experts in cold climates,” involves eight U.S. Marines working alongside the Argentine Marine Infantry Battalion No. 4 (BIM 4).
The exercises, which began on September 8 and are scheduled to conclude on September 22, focus on survival and mobility in hostile environments. Activities include low-mountain techniques, extreme cold survival, the use of crampons and snowshoes, alpine skiing, and rope maneuvers.
The presence of foreign troops has sparked political controversy. Martín Pérez, the Mayor of Río Grande, has called the deployment “concerning” and demanded that the National Executive Power clarify whether the presence has been authorized by the Argentine Congress, as required by Article 75, Clause 28 of the National Constitution. While the Navy stated these bilateral maneuvers have been part of a cooperation framework since 2017, local officials are seeking official transparency regarding the legal basis and scope of the operations.
