U.S. Marines deploy to Baltic Sea for NATO mission

The United States is deploying approximately 40 Marines from the 2nd Reconnaissance Battalion, based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, to the Baltic Sea region. The deployment is part of NATO’s Baltic Sentry mission, an enhanced vigilance initiative led by European allies under the Allied Joint Force Command Brunssum and Allied Maritime Command.

Working alongside Finland’s Coastal Brigade, the specialized troops will conduct expeditionary surveillance and tactical reconnaissance. The mission aims to improve maritime awareness, protect critical undersea infrastructure, and strengthen regional security against hybrid threats. The Marines will utilize tools such as small drones and coastal sensors to feed data into NATO’s joint operational system.

Major General Daniel Shipley, commander of U.S. Marine Corps Forces, Europe and Africa, stated that the participation demonstrates the Marine Corps’ ability to rapidly project specialized capabilities to deter threats in the Baltic littoral. Finnish Navy Captain Johan Tillander noted that the U.S. Marine Corps' systems are well-suited to supplement the regional situational picture.
