U.S. Marines upgrade CH-53K helicopters for electronic warfare resilience

The U.S. Marine Corps has initiated the ‘Mission Systems Configuration 2028’ upgrade program for the CH-53K King Stallion heavy-lift helicopter. This effort aims to enhance the aircraft's ability to maintain communications, exchange mission data, and identify friendly forces within contested electromagnetic environments.

As part of a $15.49 million engineering order awarded to Sikorsky, the upgrades will integrate improved data-transfer functions, identification friend-or-foe equipment, and an anti-jam radio waveform. These enhancements are specifically designed to ensure connectivity and situational awareness during electronic warfare scenarios where communications might otherwise be disrupted.

The CH-53K is a next-generation heavy-lift helicopter intended to transport personnel, vehicles, artillery, and fuel between ships, expeditionary bases, and dispersed forces. The integration of resilient radio links is considered critical for maintaining coordination during assault-support missions in contested battlespaces.
