U.S. Maritime Administration activates Empire State VII for classified mission

The U.S. Maritime Administration (MARAD) is activating the SUNY Maritime College training ship Empire State VII for a classified national security mission. The activation, described as a matter of ‘compelling strategic necessity,’ follows an urgent request from the Military Sealift Command.

According to a decision memorandum signed by Maritime Administrator Stephen M. Carmel, the vessel is expected to be in federal service for approximately 170 days starting around September 1. The mission is classified as SECRET, and MARAD has determined that no other suitable vessel is currently available to meet the requirement.

This marks the first operational activation of a National Security Multi-Mission Vessel (NSMV). While the specific destination remains unconfirmed, reports suggest the vessel may be deployed to the Indian Ocean. MARAD noted that the academy cannot block the activation, as the federally owned vessel must be made available for priority missions. SUNY Maritime President Rear Admiral John A. Okon stated that the college is currently preparing the vessel for federal use.
