U.S. markets finish mixed amid rising oil prices and high short interest

U.S. stock markets finished the week with mixed results as investors reacted to rising oil prices and stronger-than-expected hiring data. The Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.27 percent, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite saw marginal gains of 0.09 percent and 0.4 percent, respectively.

Oil prices rose, with Brent crude exceeding $92 a barrel due to Middle East tensions, which fueled concerns regarding shipping disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. This volatility contributed to rising bond yields; the U.S. 10-year Treasury yield reached 4.79 percent, its highest level since January 2025.

In terms of individual equity activity, significant short-selling positions have been identified among several S&P 500 companies. Charter Communications Inc. shows high bearish interest, with approximately 22.98 million shares sold short, representing 19.48 percent of its public float. Other heavily shorted companies include Super Micro Computer Inc., Moderna Inc., Lululemon Athletica Inc., and APA Corp.
