U.S. May Jobs Report Adds 172,000 Jobs, Unemployment Steady at 4.3%

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics released the May 2026 employment report showing a gain of 172,000 non‑farm jobs and an unemployment rate unchanged at 4.3%. Growth was led by leisure and hospitality (approximately 70,000 jobs), local government (about 55,000) and health care (around 35,000). Wage growth slowed to 3.4% year‑over‑year, the weakest pace in five years, while inflation is projected near 4%, indicating real wages are falling.

Economists note that despite the headline‑making job gains, the subdued wage increases raise concerns about workers’ purchasing power and could keep the Federal Reserve from cutting interest rates. Analysts also point to a correlation between the recent decline in U.S. tariffs and the rebound in employment, suggesting trade policy may be influencing the labor market.

The report challenges Democratic narratives of a faltering economy and provides the Trump administration with a positive talking point ahead of upcoming political battles.
