US Measles Outbreak Surpasses 2,000 Cases, Virginia County Issues Gathering Advisory

The United States has recorded more than 2,000 confirmed measles cases in 2025, the highest annual incidence in decades, according to CDC data. Health officials attribute the surge to declining childhood vaccination rates and the spread of vaccine misinformation, leaving pockets of susceptibility in various communities.

In Buckingham County, Virginia, the outbreak has produced 89 confirmed cases as of June 11, with no recent travel history among patients, indicating local transmission. The Virginia Department of Health issued a health advisory urging residents, workers and visitors to avoid large gatherings, including the annual Amish Parochial School Consignment Auction, until the outbreak subsides. Officials highlighted that “measles is one of the world’s most contagious diseases” and recommended that unvaccinated individuals review their immunization status, seek vaccination, and that infants as young as six months may be offered an early dose during the outbreak.

Public health authorities continue to stress rapid contact tracing, isolation and community outreach as essential measures to contain the virus and restore herd immunity.
