US Medicaid reforms spark nonprofit response

Federal changes enacted under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act will, starting in January, make it harder for people to keep Medicaid coverage. The law adds more paperwork, requires a six‑month renewal instead of an annual one, and imposes additional eligibility documentation for those who enrolled through the ACA expansion.

Local nonprofit organizations are mobilising to help affected residents. Jenni Rook, president of Thrive Counseling Center, said the agency is “preparing and anticipating what’s to come,” while her colleague Tyler Alvarez warned that the new six‑month renewal “allows an opportunity for greater loss of coverage.” Lynda Schueler, CEO of Housing Forward, described the changes as “a level of savings that comes out of this” for the federal government, and Jennie Hull of Beyond Hunger likened the Medicaid overhaul to recent SNAP work‑hour requirements.

These groups aim to assist clients with mental‑health, housing and food‑insecurity needs to navigate the added administrative burden and avoid losing benefits.
