US medical experts update cholesterol management guidelines

American medical experts have updated official guidelines for cholesterol management and dyslipidemia prevention, replacing the previous 2018 standards. The new approach shifts toward earlier intervention to address risk factors before cardiovascular disease progresses.

While LDL cholesterol—often called ‘bad’ cholesterol—remains a primary focus, the guidelines emphasize a broader view of lipids and lipoproteins. Experts note that approximately one in four adults in the US has elevated LDL levels, which can lead to atherosclerosis, heart attacks, and strokes.

Roger Blumenthal of the Johns Hopkins Ciccarone Center for the Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease, who chaired the committee, stated that 80% or more of cardiovascular disease is preventable. While healthy diet and lifestyle changes remain the first line of defense, the updated guidelines advocate for the earlier consideration of pharmaceutical treatment if lipid levels remain outside desired ranges despite lifestyle modifications. Maintaining lower LDL levels over a longer duration is cited as providing greater protection against future cardiovascular events.
