US Medicare Launches GLP-1 Bridge Program to Cut Drug Costs
GLP-1 receptor agonists are a class of hormones used to treat type 2 diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease and to promote weight loss. They work by increasing insulin secretion, reducing glucagon release and slowing gastric emptying.
Global health authorities have warned that unsupervised use of these drugs can cause severe ocular side effects, including permanent vision loss. At the same time, clinical reviews suggest the drugs may improve inflammatory conditions such as psoriasis, with studies reporting 40%‑80% reductions in PASI scores and decreases in C‑reactive protein and interleukin‑6.
On July 1, 2024 the U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) began a Medicare GLP‑1 Bridge Program, a short‑term demonstration that offers the medications Foundayo, Wegovy and Zepbound (KwikPen) for a flat $50 monthly copayment to eligible beneficiaries who meet specific BMI and health‑condition criteria and do not have diabetes, sleep apnea or fatty liver disease. The program is scheduled to run through 2027.
