US midterm donors contribute $1.2 billion in 2026 cycle

The top 20 donors for the 2026 midterm elections have contributed a total of $1.2 billion, according to an analysis by The New York Times. The donor pool is largely Republican-leaning and features significant participation from the technology and cryptocurrency sectors.

Key individual contributors include Elon Musk, who has donated $90.5 million to Republicans, and Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz, who have provided $115.3 million to Republican causes. On the Democratic side, George and Alex Soros have contributed $103.7 million through super PACs. Other notable donors include Jeff Yass, who gave $93.8 million to Republicans, and Miriam Adelson, who donated $67.6 million to Republican causes.

Corporate spending is also seeing a significant surge. Watchdog group Public Citizen reported that companies donated a record $646 million to US political campaigns in the 18 months ending in June, a 40% increase from the 2024 cycle. The cryptocurrency sector remains the top industry donor, followed closely by sports betting and artificial intelligence. For example, the sports betting industry contributed $76 million toward the November 3 midterm elections.
