US midterm elections face potential federal interference risks
Researcher Maria Lindén of the Institute of International Affairs has raised concerns regarding potential interference in the upcoming US midterm elections by the Trump administration. Lindén points to rhetoric from officials such as Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin and FBI Director Kash Patel, suggesting that federal authorities could be deployed to ‘secure’ polling stations on election day.
Lindén notes that such actions carry historical parallels to the violent tactics used by the Ku Klux Klan to prevent Black Americans from voting. Furthermore, she highlights an atmosphere of fear among Hispanic Americans due to immigration enforcement practices. She describes instances where unidentified officials, operating without clear markings, have detained individuals, a tactic she suggests is characteristic of dictatorial regimes. Lindén warns that if ICE officials were deployed to polling locations, it could lead to significant voter suppression.
