U.S. midterm elections focus on economic concerns and Congressional control

As the November midterm elections approach, the political landscape in the United States is being shaped by economic concerns and shifts in voter priorities. In South Texas, a region that shifted toward Donald Trump in 2024, Hispanic voters are increasingly prioritizing the cost of living over immigration issues. A survey by The Cook Political Report and TelevisaUnivision indicates that 29% of Texas Hispanics identify the economy as their primary voting concern, compared to 15% focused on immigration.

Nationally, the elections will determine whether Republicans maintain their narrow majority in the House of Representatives. Currently, Republicans hold 220 seats to the Democrats' 215. Democrats are seeking to reclaim control of the 435-seat chamber, which would allow them to lead investigations and potentially initiate impeachment proceedings.

Polling from RealClearPolitics shows Democrats leading the congressional intent to vote with 50.6%, compared to 42.3% for Republicans. While Donald Trump is attempting to mobilize his base to repeat his 2024 success, his popularity faces pressure from high living costs and international tensions. The outcome remains highly competitive, with 40 contested districts identified in the House race.
