United States midterm elections to decide control of Congress

The United States midterm elections, scheduled for Tuesday, November 3, will determine the composition of the House of Representatives and the Senate. Voters will decide on 435 House seats and 35 Senate seats, alongside various gubernatorial and local offices.

Polls and betting markets suggest a potential shift in power toward the Democratic Party. Polymarket indicated a 94% chance of Democrats controlling the House and a 69% chance for the Senate, while CNN analyst Harry Enten projected a 92% chance for the House and a 71% chance for the Senate.

Economic concerns, specifically the rising cost of living and inflation, are central to the election. The consumer price index rose 3.7% in the 12 months leading up to September. This economic pressure, combined with low approval ratings for President Donald Trump, is viewed by analysts as a significant factor driving a potential “punishment vote” against the current administration.

Democratic candidates are focusing on progressive platforms in several key states. In Maine, Troy Jackson is contesting a Senate seat, while in Texas, James Talarico is running for the Senate. In Michigan, Abdul El-Sayed is campaigning for the Senate, including a platform to abolish ICE.
