US Midterm Elections Set to Determine Congressional Control

The United States will hold its midterm elections on 3 November 2024. All 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 35 of the 100 Senate seats are up for election. Republicans currently control both chambers after the 2024 general election, but Democrats aim to regain the House by winning at least three seats and seek to make gains in the Senate.

Polls show about six in ten Americans dissatisfied with the country’s direction, and the declining popularity of President Donald Trump is expected to affect Republican performance. Historically, the party occupying the White House loses seats in midterms, especially when the president is unpopular. The elections also serve as a test of Trump’s agenda and of ongoing foreign policy issues, such as the war in Iran, which has no clear resolution.

A notable development is the rise of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA). Candidates associated with the DSA, including New York mayor Zohran Mamdani, have entered Democratic primaries, promoting proposals such as free public transit and paid childcare, and challenging the traditional party establishment.
