US Military adopts Barrett MRAD as Mk 22 Precision Sniper Rifle

The Department of War is equipping snipers with the Barrett MRAD rifle, designated as the Mk 22 Precision Sniper Rifle. The Army is investing $49.9 million to acquire 2,800 rifles from the Tennessee-based manufacturer, while the Marine Corps is purchasing an additional 250 units.

The Mk 22 utilizes a bolt-action system and is available in three calibers: 7.62x51mm NATO, .300 Norma Magnum, and .338 Norma Magnum. It features a ten-round detachable magazine.

While bolt-action technology was largely phased out for front-line infantry over 85 years ago, military experts note its continued utility for precision roles. Former sniper Ryan Cleckner stated that bolt-action rifles offer greater consistency, reliability, and durability in field conditions compared to gas-operated systems, which can be prone to malfunctions in dirty or poorly lubricated environments.
