US military advisers provide intelligence support to Saudi Arabia in Yemen
More than 100 US military advisers are currently stationed in Saudi Arabia to provide intelligence and targeting support for the Kingdom’s military campaign against the Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen. US personnel are operating as part of a newly established joint forces command formed in recent weeks. Total US military involvement in this effort is estimated at approximately 200 personnel.
The assistance includes geospatial targeting support and the use of a real-time battlefield monitoring tool, which officials have compared to the Pentagon’s Maven system. However, the US support is subject to strict limitations: Washington is not participating directly in military strikes, nor is it providing operational assistance such as refueling Saudi warplanes.
This increased cooperation comes amid rising tensions and indications that Iran is intensifying its efforts to support Houthi attacks. US officials have expressed concerns that hundreds of Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps officers may be working alongside the Houthis in Yemen, potentially aiming to disrupt maritime traffic in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
