Saudi Arabia receives US intelligence and targeting support against Houthis
The United States is increasing its intelligence and targeting support for Saudi Arabia in its military campaign against Houthi rebels in Yemen. Approximately 200 US military personnel are currently in Saudi Arabia, including more than 100 advisers working within a newly established joint forces command. This support includes providing geospatial data and a real-time targeting tool, similar to the Pentagon’s Maven system, to help Saudi officers monitor battlefield developments.
Despite this assistance, the US is maintaining strict limits on its involvement. Washington is not participating directly in military strikes, nor is it providing operational support such as refueling Saudi warplanes. This stance follows reports that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman made two requests to President Donald Trump for direct US military intervention, which were denied to maintain focus on Iran and the Strait of Hormuz.
The escalation comes as Houthi rebels have made significant advances along Yemen’s western coast, capturing strategic locations like the port of Mocha and moving toward the Bab al-Mandab Strait. US officials have expressed concern that hundreds of Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps officers may be working alongside the Houthis to disrupt maritime navigation. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia has indicated it is prepared to launch a large-scale military operation independently if necessary to defend its sovereignty following recent Houthi attacks that injured 73 people in southern Saudi cities.
