Kadena Air Base bans BYD vehicles over security concerns

The United States military has announced a ban on all vehicles manufactured by Chinese electric vehicle maker BYD at Kadena Air Base in Okinawa, Japan. The restriction, scheduled to take effect on October 26, applies to all BYD models, including private cars, contractor vehicles, taxis, and delivery trucks.

Base spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Alli Stormer stated that the vehicles present an “unacceptable and unmitigable risk to our personnel and our mission.” While specific technical triggers were not detailed, officials cited concerns that the advanced cameras, sensors, and GPS technology integrated into modern electric vehicles could be used to collect and transmit sensitive military intelligence to China.

Kadena Air Base serves as a critical strategic hub for U.S. operations in the Indo-Pacific, housing assets such as F-22 stealth fighters and the Typhon mid-range missile system. The decision follows a June designation by the Pentagon labeling BYD as a company that supports the Chinese military, a claim BYD has rejected. There are indications that similar restrictions may be extended to other U.S. military installations in Japan and South Korea.
