U.S. military clears Iranian sea mines from Strait of Hormuz
U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) Commander Adm. Brad Cooper announced that American forces have successfully cleared Iranian sea mines from international shipping lanes in the Strait of Hormuz. The mines were reportedly planted months ago by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
The operation utilized Navy divers, Navy SEALs, and aerial assets from the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps. Cooper described the mission as being conducted under “challenging and dangerous” conditions.
U.S. military presence in the region includes approximately 50,000 service members and more than 20 Navy ships. According to CENTCOM, U.S. protection has assisted nearly 1,500 commercial vessels in navigating the strait, transporting roughly 750 million barrels of crude oil to global markets.
Additionally, Cooper noted that the U.S. naval blockade, which resumed in mid-July, has prevented Iran from shipping oil from its own shores.
