US military faces critical ammunition shortages amid Iran conflict

The United States is facing critical shortages of advanced munitions due to the ongoing conflict with Iran. Reports indicate that the military has depleted significant portions of its stockpiles of long-range precision missiles, such as ATACMS and Precision Strike Missiles (PrSM), as well as Tomahawk cruise missiles.

Defense interceptor stocks have also seen drastic reductions. Estimates suggest Patriot interceptor inventories may have dropped by as much as 65 percent, while THAAD interceptor stocks have fallen from approximately 452 to around 250 units. These shortages have direct implications for Washington’s global military strategy, particularly regarding potential contingencies involving China, Russia, or North Korea.

President Donald Trump has expressed frustration over reports of these shortages, labeling those who claim the military is running low as traitors, even as his administration requests over $50 billion from Congress for ammunition procurement. While Trump stated that the decision to pause new strikes against Iran was due to ongoing negotiations, internal sources suggest that the depletion of essential weapon systems played a significant role in the decision to halt planned attacks.
