U.S. military faces critical Patriot missile shortage in Europe
U.S. military and NATO officials report a 'beyond critical' shortage of Patriot missile interceptors in Europe. This depletion is largely attributed to the ongoing conflict with Iran, which has seen significant numbers of interceptors moved from European stocks to the Middle East to defend U.S. and Gulf allies against Iranian drones and missiles.
Defense officials warn that the lack of ammunition, rather than a lack of launchers, leaves NATO vulnerable to potential Russian ballistic missile attacks. They suggest the military currently has very limited capability to defend against even a single strike or a stray missile. One analyst estimates that approximately 65 percent of U.S. Patriot interceptor stocks have been utilized in operations against Iran.
In response to rising tensions, CIA Director John Ratcliffe recently traveled to Moscow to warn Russia against attacking NATO territory, a trip President Donald Trump described as 'semi-routine.' While some officials express concern over vulnerabilities, NATO spokespeople and President Trump have denied that a critical defense crisis exists, maintaining that sufficient ammunition remains for territorial defense and support for Ukraine.
