US military focuses on nuclear modernization and regional war risks

The US Air Force is seeking an artificial intelligence agent to centralize fragmented data for the aging Minuteman III nuclear missile fleet. The program currently relies on approximately 60 disconnected systems, ranging from shared networks to local hard drives. The goal is to create a unified interface that can pull information from maintenance records and design drawings in near real time to support the ‘no fail’ mission of keeping 400 missiles ready for launch.

Separately, Elbridge Colby, the Under Secretary of War for Policy, warned of the dangers posed by regional nuclear conflicts. Speaking at the 2026 United States Strategic Command Deterrence Symposium, Colby stated that a regional war involving the local use of nuclear weapons could escalate rapidly and poses a greater threat than a surprise mass attack on the US. He emphasized that modernization of the American nuclear deterrent is the military’s most important initiative, requiring a survivable and diversified nuclear triad to provide the president with credible options to deter adversaries.
