US military inspects Greenland airfield for potential NATO use

The US military has conducted inspections of the Narsarsuaq airport in southern Greenland to evaluate its potential future use by NATO member states. US Northern Command confirmed that specialists used mapping and geodetic equipment to inspect runways and existing structures, including dimensions and facility characteristics.

The inspection was conducted jointly with the governments of Denmark and Greenland. This follows an agreement between Danish Defense Minister Jeppe Bruus and Greenlandic Foreign Minister Mute Egede to extend the airport's operational life by one year to facilitate discussions regarding military utility for Denmark and other NATO allies.

While the US Northern Command confirmed the mapping activities, it did not clarify if these inspections indicate the establishment of a new US military base in Greenland. Greenland remains part of the Danish Kingdom with autonomous status, and both Danish and Greenlandic authorities have emphasized the importance of respecting the region's territorial integrity.
