US military policy shifts under Trump administration
President Donald Trump has instructed the Pentagon to substantially reduce joint military exercises with South Korea. Citing high costs and Seoul's refusal to participate in actions against Iran, Trump expressed dissatisfaction with the Ulchi Freedom Shield exercises, which were scheduled for August 17–27. While he noted it was too late to cancel them entirely, he claimed the drills send a hostile signal to North Korea. Despite his remarks, South Korean officials reported that the exercises commenced as planned.
Separately, Pentagon Chief Pete Hegseth has indicated that the United States intends to conduct land-based operations against drug traffickers in Latin America. However, Brazilian military leadership assesses that such operations are unlikely to occur on Brazilian soil. Military officials suggest that any US intervention would require cooperation from Brazilian institutions, noting that Brazil serves more as a consumer and transit hub rather than a primary producer, and highlighting the logistical challenges posed by Brazil's extensive borders.
