United States confirms deployment of on-orbit space control weapons
U.S. military officials have officially confirmed the deployment of on-orbit space control weapons, marking a significant shift toward transparency regarding orbital combat capabilities. Air Force Secretary Troy Meink announced at the Air, Space and Cyber Conference that these systems are currently operational and intended to defend the joint force against hostile actions.
General Dan Caine, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, emphasized that the U.S. military must adapt to prepare for potential combat ranging from the seabed to cislunar space—the region between Earth and the Moon. Lt. Gen. Gregory Gagnon of the Space Force noted that as humanity advances deeper into space, the service must defend U.S. interests against adversaries like China and Russia, who are also developing space-based military capabilities.
The Space Force aims to expand its presence, with plans to potentially double its personnel to approximately 25,000 within five years. While the Pentagon has declined to provide technical specifics regarding the nature of these weapons, experts suggest they may include lasers, radio frequency jammers, or kinetic devices. The move has drawn criticism from China and Russia, who advocate for the complete demilitarization of space and warn against an arms race, citing the 1967 Outer Space Treaty.
