United States reinstates naval blockade of Iran and drops 20% Hormuz cargo fee

The United States resumed a naval blockade of Iranian ports, deploying more than 20 warships and hundreds of aircraft across the Middle East. CENTCOM said fresh air strikes hit Iranian targets in Bushehr, Bandar Abbas, Abadan, Mahshahr and the Gulf island of Qeshm to “degrade Iran’s ability to attack commercial shipping.”

Iran responded with missile and drone attacks on U.S.‑aligned sites in the Gulf, strikes on ships in Omani waters, and claims of closing the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said the U.S. action “completely dismantled” the June 17 Islamabad memorandum of understanding, leaving Tehran “no longer bound” by the pact.

President Donald Trump initially announced a 20 percent fee on cargo transiting the Strait of Hormuz to reimburse U.S. protection costs, then reversed the proposal, saying the levy would be replaced by “trade and investment deals” with Gulf states. U.S. Treasury also expanded sanctions, blacklisting over 50 individuals, firms and vessels linked to Iranian oil exports.

The escalation has pushed oil prices to multi‑week highs and raised concerns of a broader regional conflict, with multiple Gulf countries reporting alerts and sirens as hostilities continue.
