U.S. military reports $43.6 billion war cost and AI intelligence error

The U.S. military has provided Congress with an updated estimate regarding the costs of the conflict involving Iran. According to U.S. Central Command, the war has cost $43.6 billion as of September 3. This figure reflects a significant increase from previous reports, with munitions costs alone rising by over $6 billion in approximately one month.

In a separate intelligence incident occurring this spring during the conflict, the U.S. military nearly launched an operation against a Chinese vessel in the Middle East due to an artificial intelligence error. An intelligence report, generated by an analyst using an AI chatbot, incorrectly identified the ship's cargo as components related to a nuclear weapons program.

While U.S. forces were preparing to intercept the vessel and aircraft were already airborne, officials conducted a secondary check that revealed the intelligence was “completely inaccurate.” The incident has raised concerns regarding the military's increasing reliance on AI for data analysis and targeting decisions.
