US Military Restores Flu Vaccine Mandate After Texas Base Outbreak

A flu outbreak at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, infected between 160 and 222 basic trainees, resulting in several hospitalizations and the death of 25‑year‑old recruit Keon McDaniel. The surge occurred after Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth had made flu vaccinations voluntary for all active‑duty, reserve personnel and civilian employees in April, citing concerns over medical autonomy.

In response to the outbreak, the Pentagon announced on June 24 that mandatory flu vaccinations are being reinstated for all recruits in basic training across the Army, Navy, Air Force, Space Force, and related agencies. Exceptions have been granted to allow each service branch to apply the requirement as needed, based on risk assessments.
