US military strikes kill at least 227 in anti-drug campaign

The United States military has conducted a series of lethal strikes against vessels in the Eastern Pacific as part of a campaign to disrupt drug trafficking. According to official announcements and analysis, these strikes have destroyed at least 70 vessels and resulted in the deaths of at least 227 people.

The Trump administration has informed Congress that the United States is engaged in an “armed conflict” against drug cartels, a status that began with the first strike on September 2, 2025. Under a classified Justice Department finding, the administration has labeled those killed as “unlawful combatants,” allowing for lethal actions without judicial review.

U.S. Southern Command, led by General Francis L. Donovan, stated that the Joint Task Force Western Hemisphere was established to execute lethal actions against “destabilizing narco-terrorist networks.” While the military maintains these strikes target vessels involved in narcotics trafficking, critics and human rights groups have questioned the lack of public evidence regarding the presence of drugs or cartel affiliations on the struck boats, arguing for prosecution over summary execution.
