US military strikes on drug trafficking vessels kill at least 230

The US military has conducted a series of strikes against maritime vessels, resulting in the destruction of at least 78 boats and the deaths of at least 230 people. The campaign, which began on September 2, 2025, is intended to curb drug trafficking into the United States.

The Trump administration has informed Congress that the nation is in an “armed conflict” against drug cartels. Based on a classified Justice Department finding, the administration has labeled those killed in these strikes as “unlawful combatants,” allowing for lethal engagement without judicial review. While the US military reports at least 26 survivors, 23 people are presumed dead after search efforts failed to locate them.

US Southern Command has stated that in some instances, crew members were removed from vessels before they were sunk and subsequently transferred to Ecuador. Critics in Congress and human rights organizations have challenged the administration's legal justifications, arguing for traditional prosecution rather than lethal military strikes. To date, the administration has not released public evidence confirming the presence of narcotics or specific cartel affiliations on the targeted vessels.
