US military strikes tanker in Gulf of Oman amid maritime tensions
Tensions in the Middle East have escalated following maritime incidents in the Gulf of Oman and the Red Sea. US Central Command reported that an MH-60 helicopter fired two Hellfire missiles at the M/V Vela Nova, a Panama-flagged cargo ship. The US military stated the vessel was attempting to breach a blockade of Iranian ports and had ignored multiple warnings. The US has maintained this blockade since mid-July to restrict Iranian oil export revenues.
In the Bab al-Mandab Strait, Houthi militia forces launched a rocket attack against a Saudi Arabian oil tanker.
