US military tests Hammer of the Gods GPS-jamming system

The United States military, including the Navy and Space Force, recently conducted maritime tests of the Hammer of the Gods system. Part of the Project Convergence Capstone 6 exercise, the system is a deployable electronic warfare transmitter designed to jam satellite navigation and precision timing services.

The testing aims to prepare forces for combat environments where GPS and other Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) signals are unavailable, a scenario increasingly common in regions like the Baltic Sea due to Russian interference. Lieutenant Colonel Darrin Hall of the U.S. Space Force noted that such signal outages impact the accuracy of long-range artillery, guided missiles, and cruise missiles.

To counter these vulnerabilities, researchers are exploring alternatives such as quantum sensors that determine position using Earth’s magnetic field or advanced time-keeping methods that do not rely on satellites.
