Pentagon to livestream Nidal Hasan's firing squad execution

The Pentagon has announced that the execution of Nidal Malik Hasan, a former U.S. Army psychiatrist, will be livestreamed online. Hasan is scheduled to be executed by firing squad on December 3 at Fort Hood, Texas, the site of the 2009 mass shooting in which he killed 13 people and wounded 32 others.

President Donald Trump approved the execution by firing squad following a recommendation from Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. Hegseth stated that making the event public is intended to demonstrate that there are “serious consequences” for such actions. If carried out, this will be the first U.S. military execution since 1961 and the first use of a firing squad by the military since 1945.

The plan has drawn significant criticism from both political and human rights sectors. The United Nations human rights office stated that livestreaming the execution could amount to a public execution and may breach the prohibition against torture. Within the U.S., bipartisan lawmakers and religious leaders have condemned the proposal, with some describing it as “barbaric” or a “spectacle.” Vice President J.D. Vance expressed uncertainty regarding whether the livestream will proceed and stated he would not watch it if it does.
