U.S. Mint Issues Trump $1 Coin for America’s 250th Anniversary
The U.S. Mint will strike a limited‑edition $1 commemorative coin bearing the portrait of President Donald J. Trump to mark the nation’s semiquincentennial in 2026. The coin, authorized by legislation introduced by Representative Barbara Lee (D‑CA) and passed with bipartisan support, is permitted under a new law that specifically allows a living person to appear on a legal‑tender commemorative coin for the 250th‑year celebration.
The design shows Trump in a suit on the obverse, with “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and the dates 1776–2026, while the reverse carries the Great Seal of the United States. Although the piece has a gold‑like finish, it is not made of actual gold and is intended as a collectible rather than circulating currency. The issuance follows a rare historical precedent when living President Calvin Coolidge appeared on a 1926 commemorative half‑dollar, and it navigates the usual rule that only deceased presidents are featured on such coins.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced the release, noting the coin as a symbol of patriotism and the enduring promise of liberty. The coin will be legal tender at one dollar but primarily marketed to collectors as part of the broader semiquincentennial commemorations, which also include special‑edition passports and plans to place Trump’s signature on future paper currency.
