U.S. Mint releases $1 commemorative coin featuring Donald Trump
The U.S. Mint has begun selling a commemorative $1 coin featuring the portrait of President Donald Trump, marking the first time a living president has appeared on American currency in a century. The release celebrates the nation’s semiquincentennial, or 250th anniversary of independence.
The gold-colored coins, which are composed of a copper, zinc, manganese, and nickel alloy rather than precious metal, feature Trump’s likeness on one side with the inscriptions “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “1776 ~ 2026.” The reverse side displays the presidential seal with the number “250.” The Mint is also offering 250,000 special-edition coins struck on July 4th, which include a unique “July 4th” privy mark.
While the coins are being marketed as numismatic products for collectors at a premium—with rolls of 25 costing $61 and bags of 100 costing $154.50—the U.S. Mint confirmed they are also legal tender. The issuance has sparked debate regarding federal laws that traditionally restrict the depiction of living individuals on U.S. currency. Supporters and Treasury officials point to the Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020 as a basis for the commemorative release.
