U.S. Mint unveils 2028 American Innovation $1 coin designs

The U.S. Mint has released candidate designs for the 2028 American Innovation $1 coins. The proposed reverse designs aim to honor specific innovations and innovators from Nebraska, Colorado, North Dakota, and South Dakota.

Proposed themes include center-pivot irrigation in Nebraska, the Pueblo Chile in Colorado, unmanned aircraft systems in North Dakota, and the Dupree family’s efforts to preserve the American buffalo in South Dakota. The Commission of Fine Arts reviewed the portfolios on September 17, and the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee is scheduled to consider them on October 6. Final design selection rests with the Secretary of the Treasury.

The American Innovation $1 Coin Act, which began in 2018, authorizes the program to honor various states, territories, and the District of Columbia. While reverse designs change annually, all coins in the series maintain the same Statue of Liberty obverse.
