US National Debt Projected to Hit $41.1 Trillion Ceiling by Mid‑2027

A report from the Bipartisan Policy Center in Washington forecasts that the United States’ federal debt, currently about $39.2 trillion, will likely reach the statutory ceiling of $41.1 trillion between the end of winter and mid‑summer 2027. The debt ceiling was last raised by $5 trillion in July 2025, moving the limit from $36.1 trillion to $41.1 trillion.

If Congress does not raise the ceiling again, the Treasury would have to rely on extraordinary financing measures for roughly six to nine months. After that period, the government could be unable to meet its financial obligations on time. The report notes that the timing of the ceiling breach is influenced by factors such as the $29 billion cost of the war against Iran, potential tariff revenues, and other fiscal pressures.
