U.S. national debt surpasses $40 trillion milestone
The United States national debt has surpassed the $40 trillion milestone, marking a significant fiscal escalation. According to Treasury Department data, the debt reached $40.05 trillion on August 18, more than doubling its 2017 level. This milestone follows a rapid ascent, with the debt hitting $38 trillion in October and $39 trillion in March.
Economists and think tanks warn of broad socioeconomic consequences. The Conference Board reports that rising deficits may increase student loan costs, mortgage rates, and small business loan interest. Furthermore, Social Security trust fund insolvency is projected for 2032, which could result in a 24% reduction in benefits unless deficit spending is reduced or payroll taxes are increased.
Rising interest payments are now consuming a larger portion of federal spending than national defense or Medicare. Experts note that as the government borrows more to cover shortfalls, it must offer higher yields on Treasury bonds, which in turn pushes mortgage rates higher for consumers. The Peterson Foundation estimates that without intervention, the national debt could reach $50 trillion within six years.
