US National Parks commemorate WWII history

Sixteen United States National Parks are participating in a commemorative series titled ‘World War II Across America’s National Parks’ to honor the upcoming 85th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor and the nation's 250th birthday.

Leading up to December 7, three parks will be highlighted weekly to showcase various aspects of the American wartime experience, including both triumphs and tragedies. The initiative includes the Pearl Harbor National Memorial, alongside less prominent sites such as the Governors Island National Monument in New York and the Golden Gate Recreation Area in California.

Governors Island National Monument served as the Eastern Theater of Operations headquarters, established two weeks after the Pearl Harbor attack. This site oversaw the defense of 40 states and Washington, D.C., as well as military bases in locations including Iceland, Greenland, and Bermuda.
