US natural gas futures face volatility amid record hedge fund short positions
The US natural gas market is experiencing significant volatility as hedge funds amass their largest short positions in futures on record. According to reports, short-only positions across seven benchmark Henry Hub contracts have reached 599,731, the highest level since May 2013. This bearish sentiment is driven by forecasts of an unusually mild winter in the Northern Hemisphere, which could suppress demand for heating and electricity generation.
While recent price declines were fueled by expectations of warmer-than-expected conditions, some market indicators suggest a potential rebound. Technical rebounds and tactical short-covering have recently driven upward momentum, supported by updated weather models signaling cooler temperatures in the Midwest and Eastern heating zones. Additionally, strong liquefied natural gas (LNG) export flows and plateauing domestic production levels are providing structural support to prices.
The current market positioning creates a risk of a short squeeze. If temperatures drop unexpectedly, hedge funds may be forced to cover their positions rapidly, potentially accelerating a price rally similar to events seen in previous winters.
