US natural gas prices influenced by El Nino and record production

US natural gas prices are facing conflicting market drivers. Analysts suggest that a strong El Nino pattern could lead to a milder winter, potentially reducing residential and commercial heating demand. This, combined with record-level US gas production—expected to rise by approximately 4% from current highs—is projected to keep supplies balanced and prices lower than the previous winter. Some estimates suggest Henry Hub benchmark prices could average $3.50/mmBtu between December and February, roughly 12% lower than last year.

However, other market indicators show a bullish structure. Recent revisions have increased US gas demand forecasts for the short term, and production has seen declines following a pipeline disruption in Kentucky. Additionally, gas flows to Freeport LNG are expected to recover, supporting demand for exports. While mild weather remains a risk to demand, technical analysis suggests that as long as certain price supports hold, the market may continue a recovery trend.
