U.S. Navy Awards $76.6 B Submarine Contracts to General Dynamics and Huntington Ingalls

The United States Navy announced a $76.6 billion contract package for its next generation of submarines. General Dynamics Electric Boat will receive $29.5 billion for five Columbia‑class ballistic‑missile submarines, while both Electric Boat and Huntington Ingalls Industries‑Newport News Shipbuilding will share $42.1 billion for nine Virginia‑class attack submarines, plus $5 billion for shipbuilding infrastructure and nuclear shipbuilding program investments. The contracts secure continuous production of both classes, which are slated to replace the aging Ohio‑class ballistic‑missile fleet and the older Los Angeles‑class attack boats.

In a related award, the Navy also contracted for a new class of 10,000‑ton nuclear‑powered attack submarines, with construction to be carried out at Electric Boat in Groton, Connecticut, and at Huntington Ingalls’ Newport News facility. The procurement follows the July 2025 defense spending bill and is intended to stabilize the submarine industrial base while expanding the fleet’s anti‑submarine, strike, and special‑operations capabilities.
