US Navy awards major contracts for submarine and nuclear propulsion support
The US Department of Defense has awarded significant contracts to support the maintenance and research of naval nuclear propulsion systems. Fluor Marine Propulsion LLC received a $2.4 billion contract to manage and operate the Naval Nuclear Laboratory’s research, engineering, and testing facilities. This work will take place across sites in Pennsylvania, New York, and Idaho, supporting the nuclear-powered submarines and aircraft carriers of the US Navy.
Additionally, Fairbanks Morse Defense (FMD) has been awarded a $99.09 million sole-source contract from the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA). FMD will provide repairs, parts, and labor for Emergency Diesel Generator (EDG) overhauls on six nuclear submarines through 2030. This initiative is part of a broader Navy strategy to extend the service life of Ohio- and Los Angeles-class submarines by up to 14 years.
To accelerate maintenance, FMD is utilizing robotic welding technology and a “Pit Stop” methodology co-developed with the Navy. This approach, inspired by NASCAR and Formula One, aims to reduce depot maintenance periods from months to weeks by pre-staging components to avoid inspection bottlenecks.
