US Navy evaluates Japanese, South Korean, and Turkish frigate designs
The United States Navy and the White House are evaluating foreign frigate designs to rapidly expand the American naval fleet and address domestic shipbuilding capacity shortages. The study focuses on three specific international models: Japan’s Mogami-class, South Korea’s Chungnam-class, and Turkey’s Istanbul-class.
Under a proposed 'Finnish model,' the U.S. may construct the first one or two vessels in foreign shipyards before transitioning production to domestic American facilities. This strategy aims to bypass current production bottlenecks and leverage the expertise of trusted allies. To facilitate this, a national security memorandum was issued to allow the Pentagon to consider foreign-built warships, bypassing long-standing legal restrictions.
While the administration views this as a way to bolster maritime capabilities against growing geopolitical challenges, the plan faces significant opposition in the U.S. Congress. Lawmakers have expressed concerns that procuring foreign-built warships could undermine the domestic shipbuilding industry. The Navy's formal assessment of international combatants and cargo vessels is expected to be completed by November 12, 2026.
