US Navy considers renaming Doris Miller aircraft carrier for Donald Trump

The US Navy is reportedly considering renaming a Ford-class aircraft carrier currently designated to honor Doris Miller, a Black sailor celebrated for his heroism during the attack on Pearl Harbor. According to internal discussions reported by CNN, officials are weighing the possibility of renaming the vessel after Donald Trump, a move that would be unprecedented as no US aircraft carrier has been named after a sitting president.

Doris Miller, who served as a mess attendant during World War II, was the first Black sailor to receive the Navy Cross. While the Navy is discussing renaming the carrier, officials are also reportedly considering assigning Miller’s name to a different warship and recommending him for the Medal of Honor, though the latter requires Congressional and White House approval.

In a separate directive, President Trump has ordered the Navy to abandon modern electromagnetic catapult systems on the vessel in favor of traditional steam-powered catapults. This technical shift, mandated through Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, could lead to significant redesign costs and potential delays in the ship’s projected 2034 entry into service. Miller’s family expressed shock at the potential name change, noting they were not informed by the Navy.
