U.S. Navy evaluates MQ-9B SeaGuardian unmanned aircraft
The U.S. Navy has conducted evaluations of the MQ-9B SeaGuardian unmanned aircraft system at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island in Washington. Developed by General Atomics Aeronautical Systems (GA-ASI), the SeaGuardian is a maritime-optimized variant of the MQ-9B remotely piloted aircraft family designed for long-endurance missions.
The assessment took place during the Maritime Patrol and Reconnaissance Force (MPRF) Commander’s Operational Group, where senior leaders and tacticians reviewed the platform's potential for maritime patrol, reconnaissance, and anti-submarine warfare. The aircraft was displayed alongside the Boeing P-8A Poseidon to illustrate its role in future naval aviation capabilities.
Currently, the Navy operates the SeaGuardian under a Company-Owned, Company-Operated (COCO) arrangement with GA-ASI. This model supports ongoing capability assessments for the U.S. 7th Fleet, allowing the Navy to test the platform in realistic maritime environments and evaluate its potential as a force multiplier before establishing a fully organic fleet.
